Supplementary Education
Day schools have grown significantly and all the waking
time of a school going child is spent in school,
homework, tutorials etc. Kids are constrained with
limited avenues in every aspect of educational, social
and vocational life in India.. Further, most parents
shun any education related to Vedas and Hindu scriptures
for their children, as it is viewed as communal
activity. The classroom time is usually devoted to
education with job placement in mind. The critical years
of adolescence, which research has demonstrated are the
most crucial years for impacting upon long-term
identity, are completely neglected.
Associations have to embark upon temple-based
programming and have to strengthen our cultural roots,
without the fear of being branded as non-secular. Such
centers have to focus on ways to strengthen religious
content and educational programming. Individuals should
be saturated with the memory of their pedigree and
roots, music, texts and traditions, values and beliefs.
Our goals should include communicating concerns and
sensitivities of the community to those of other tribes,
castes and faiths, and helping our community understand
the concerns and sensitivities of others. As the
community forges ahead in the new millennium, its
greatest challenge lies in confronting the prospect of
continued erosion and loss of our own culture and
identity.
