Upanayanam

Upanayanam is one of the most important Samskaras for a Hindu Brahmin .This ceremony is mostly performed between the ages of 9 and15 and thus a boy gets second spiritual birth .This ceremony is called " Brahmopadesha " or " Upanayana " . During ceremony the father places the sacred thread across the child's left shoulder under the advice of Guru .The sacred thread consists of three strands signifying Brahma, Vishnu and Siva. This represents also
Jnana, Karma and Bhakti.Next Moonji a girdle made out of Munja grass is tied around the waist of the child. This is to protect his purity and to keep evils away. The third important part is Gayatri Mantra. * This Mantra is whispered into the right ear of the child by the father .All the above should be done under the guidance of the Guru /Priest. Everyday the child is expected to do
"Sandhyavandan" During the Sandyavandan the child is to repeat the Gayathri Manthra which will purify his mind and increase his
knowlee
*During Upanayanm, brahmo-pa-desham is given by the
Priest. This is the mediation mantra, Gayatri.
